Abstract: Optimism in autism has been associated with better social skills and increased success in school and college. This paper reviews studies that support this association and suggests potential mechanisms that may explain how optimism can improve outcomes for individuals with autism. A review of research on the relationship between optimism and depression showed positive effects of optimism on depressive symptoms, while studies suggest that optimistic people have lower levels of anxiety. Results from studies examining relationships between optimism and self-esteem show that optimism predicts higher self-esteem. Finally, studies indicate that optimism is positively correlated with cognitive flexibility, suggesting that optimists are able to change their thinking about events around them. Future directions include studying the implications of optimism on other aspects of life, including the quality of friendships and romantic relationships.
